But with all this gushing about the actors, I shouldn't forget about the music, the blues, all of it lovingly depicted (maybe at times too lovingly- Cedric's narration) while also in rightful critical form on how the blues got completely ripped off by any (arguably talented) rock band waiting in the wings. He casts not entirely on if they exactly fit the original people, but if they got the right stuff for the particular person: Muddy Waters, the real bad-ass of the group and the real main character of the story, is given powerhouse form by Jeffrey Wright in every frame Beyonce Knowles, while hardly the worst thing in Dreamgirls, completely redeems herself and then some as Etta James, going all out in a full-fleshed out dramatic performance (how well she sings is a given) Columbus Short, given the walking cliché of Little, takes it for everything it's worth, and it is never less than interesting Eaommon Walker (from Oz) is great as Howlin' Wolf in any scene Mos Def finds the line of hamming it up and playing it for real for Chuck Berry, and makes it work all the way Adrien Brody, as the token white main player, is given not a lot to work with either, but is also riveting and captivating and a reminder of why he won the Oscar years back. So, the actors fill in the gaps in the formula, and make it far more enjoyable and full of life than it might have in other hands this is the wisdom of the director Darnell Martin, usually a TV director. The music, it goes without saying, is spectacular and wonderful and often shown as developing out of a myriad of things (frustration, sadness, joy, craziness, anguish, love), but the script does follow some of those lines that are troublesome in bio-pics (one character, Little Walter, is the proverbial black sheep and that's almost all he is, and there's the obvious dippings in-and-out of relationship things). The actors, it should be said, really do a lot of heavy lifting here. We may not get an entire life story out of all those in the film, but unlike Walk the Line or Ray we don't need it at all to know these people, or the characters. Cadillac Records covers some of the crucial blues artists- Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry (the cross-over), Willie Dixon, Etta James- and how their personalities were shaped by whatever was around them, and then into the songs. There was always blues in the US in the 20th century, but it grew steadily, out of sorrow and bad days and nights and hate and love gone bad or good for African Americans. The best thing about Cadillac Records, the thing that will have me go back and watch it again more than anything, is that it captures what it was like to be around the one of the significant blues explosions in America. There's an attitude to a kind of music, whether it's punk or jazz or psychedelic rock or even in "wtf" mode in I'm Not There. Sometimes all we can hope for is that they get the mood right, and even that isn't attained some years back the wildly over-praised Ray had strong performances but, to me, didn't really capture that feel of what it was like to be in the midst of something really spectacular- we only saw it being great for Ray Charles (not that his music didn't help the movie, somewhat besides the point). The best bio-pics on musicians tend to get it just about right (Bird, Sid & Nancy, The Doors, Walk the Line) even if the films aren't great or, even worse, have those tired old conventions of real-life people fit in tidy fashion for a 2-hour storyline. It's hard to get a feel for a specific time and period in movies let alone an actual mood of a particular music. Reviewed by Quinoa1984 8 / 10 sure, it may have it's share of clichés and pit-falls, but it makes you feel the Blues, deep down your spine, long after you leave Utilizing a special docking collar, this vehicle is capable of leaving the Phoenix 1000 superyacht while submerged and making excursions down to 610 meters (2000 feet). The area would be excellent for covered, informal, deck-level dining.Īft of the superstructure, or optionally, above the control cabin on the bow, is an area for a docking minisub. Hydraulically actuated after doors could be designed to open, allowing fresh air to circulate. The greater the degree of closure to the after portion of the structure, the less turbulence and the more hydromdynamic efficiency. There is a large degree of latitude possible with regard to the styling of the structure, with the caveat that its hydrodynamic efficiency will have a significant effect on the submerged speed of the submarine.Īft of the deck saloon is a covered space that can be either fully or partially enclosed. The superstructure itself is composed principally of aluminum (or FRP if the owner prefers), and it houses the deck saloon pressure vessel and also provides the structural base for the flying bridge. A small automobile could be kept in the aft section if desired. The aft portion of the saloon has a large acrylic window, providing a view astern that also acts as a large hydraulically operated hatch. The captain has a hemispherical sector acrylic viewport immediately in front, with the transparent cylindrical walls to either side. This area contains all the necessary control, monitoring and navigation equipment to operate the submarine in the surfaced condition. In the forward portion of the saloon is the surface bridge. By fitting transparent sections into the deck of the flying bridge, a view above can be enjoyed as well. The deck saloon would have a comfortably appointed interior and would boast an incredible view for observation, both on the surface and when submerged. The overall length of the deck saloon pressure hull would be 12 meters. As proposed, this area would be composed of structural acrylic cylindrical sections 2.1 meters (7′) in diameter and 20 centimeters (8″) in thickness. Immediately below the flying bridge and accessible through a large hydraulically operated hatch and a stairway, is the deck saloon. Luxurious interior of the Phoenix 1000 undersea superyacht The show really hit its stride near the end. They then took a few minutes to reminisce about the old days and gently razz each other like brothers before performing an a capella Breathe, which underlined the fact that these boys are best when they are singing together. Without a live band, the Backstreet Boys relied on dance moves and vocal harmonies. During No Place - with its refrain “ain’t no place like you” - a video of the Boys and their families played on the screens, a reminder that they are in a different chapter in their lives. While the stage setup was deceptively basic, it made excellent use of lighting, and two screens suspended directly over their heads ensured there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. (You’d think it was a bouquet toss at a wedding the way people moved on the floor.) McLean and Richardson returned the favour, tossing briefs into the crowd. At least one bra made it up onto the stage. And adoring fans they were: “We’ve waited 25 years for a selfie” read a sign. Interactions with adoring fans in the front half of the set were minimal but heartfelt. Still, there were some muscular vocal performances, particularly on slow jams such as Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely, which brought the night’s first costume change, and Incomplete, which was a soaring showpiece for all of them. The Boys delivered on both counts - you couldn’t tell these men and their knees are in their 40s (and, in Richardson’s case, 50s) - though sometimes their harmonies struggled to soar above the din of the crowd, especially during hits such as Get Down. With the absence of live instrumentation, a show like this is about two things: vocal performances and dancing. (He’s been candid about his struggles with muscle tension dysphonia and, while he wasn’t always the most powerful singer on the stage, four other guys always had his back.) “The Backstreet Boys would not exist without you,” Littrell acknowledged before launching into a smooth solo snippet of Nobody Else. The Backstreet Boys gave their fans exactly what they wanted. Men who belong to a “vocal group,” not a boy band.īut the fact Backstreet Boys are still packing out arenas on multi-leg tours also serves as proof positive that one should never, ever underestimate the career-making - and sustaining - power of fan girls, especially the ones that grow up to be fan women with disposable incomes. 1 on the Billboard 200 - making the Backstreet Boys the world’s most enduring boy band.īoy bands, of course, are not built for longevity by design - there’s a reason why the boy band in the FOX animated series Bob’s Burgers is called, hilariously, Boyz 4 Now: the boys, eventually, turn into men. They’ve released nine studio albums, including 2019’s DNA - which debuted at No. Save for a brief hiatus in the 2000s and those few years when Richardson - the elder statesman of the band - left the group, the Backstreet Boys are on pace to celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band next year, having formed in Orlando in 1993 - a fact they, too, seemed in disbelief about. (If it felt like the Backstreet Boys were particularly ubiquitous in 1997, it could be because that was the year their debut dropped in America, dovetailing with the release of 1997’s sophomore album Backstreet’s Back.)īut no groups of their ilk have gone the distance the way BSB has. The Backstreet Boys have been titans of pop since they stormed the charts with their 1996 self-titled international debut as part of an explosion of boy bands in that decade. They know who their audience is and exactly what they want to hear. in an explosion of smoke, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson - perfectly choreographed, of course, right down to their co-ordinating red and black outfits - kicked it back to ‘96 and opened the show with I Wanna Be With You followed by 2000’s The Call and Don’t Want You Back from 1999’s Millennium. ★★★★ out of five Backstreet's back, all right!
